When the Hollywood Athletic Club first opened in 1924, it was established as a health club, with memberships to many Hollywood celebrities and athletes. This is what a typical 1931 membership card looked like, that granted a member access to several clubs in the Los Angeles area. Membership was originally $150 for initiation fees and $10 for monthly dues.
In addition to being a club member, famous actor John Wayne occupied the Hollywood athletic club penthouse for some time. He was rumored to throw billiard balls at cars on sunset during his bad days and was also rumored to have kept a real life cow on the balcony, so that ‘fresh milk was readily available‘.
