PanAm Chess Tournament

...

“Checkmate!”, was often the declaration during the 1945 Pan American Chess Congress Annual Chess Tournament hosted at The Hollywood Athletic Club. Often followed by a few expletives as round after round was played by sixteen International Master Chess players from eight countries! The event was organized and hosted by Herman Steiner, former Chess Master of the California State Chess Association. Admission was $1 per day, or $12 for the entire tournament and prizes were awarded ranging from $50 to $1000 for the Grand Prize. Tournaments are still played today in various locations worldwide.
